VOICE CLIP—Eldwyn and Azurik

In Azurik: Rise of Perathia, Scully is credited with Azurik, Eldwyn, Balthazar, and Death Guardian.
Azurik: Rise of Perathia is an action-adventure game developed by Adrenium Games and published by Microsoft Game Studios in 2001. Azurik was released early in the Xbox console’s life. It features a score by game composer Jeremy Soule, with additional music by Julian Soule.

Interviewer: On Azurik: Rise of Perathia, you did all three of the main characters: Azurik, Eldwyn, and Balthazar?
David: Correct.
Interviewer: They’re all so different. Can you break down how you came up with those three?
David: Azurik was a young, naïve character I placed in the tenor-upper range; Eldwyn was a baritone-grizzled, older Shakespearean actor like Olivier or Alec Guinness. Balthazar was a bass-baritone nod to Alan Rickman. The Death Guardian was based on all the movie trailer voices I loved, ala Don LeFontaine. I had to place them all in different registers to keep them apart. Make sense?
Interviewer: Yes. Well, in the trailer, all three characters are talking to one another.
David: Exactly. So, I had to make them vocally distinct, so there was no overlap. I mean, as a voice talent you try to make voices distinctive if you’re doing numerous ones in the same game anyway, but the stakes were a little higher for that one. I did some other characters, too.
Interviewer: You can find your ad-libs online. Again.
David: I know. They put them in the credit sequence at the end.
Interviewer: What’s behind posting your ad-libs? Why do you think so many of yours get airplay? They’re funny but—
David: Dunno. Of all my voice work, I’m proudest of my vocal work on Azurik.
